St. Petersburg Bridges, Russia
The first pontoon bridge connected Admiralteyskiy and Vasilievsky Isles in 1856 directly in front of the Winter Palace, but in 1896-1897 it was relocated to the place where today the Palace Bridge is situated. The permanent iron drawbridge was constructed in 1912-1916 by engineers A. Pshenitzkiy and R. Meltzer. Its noteworthy that some wooden elements of bridge's construction remained unchanged till 1978. Palace Bridge is technically the most perfect one of all Neva's bridges.
Unique mechanism of the drawbridge, consisted of engines, colossal cogwheels (some full metal cast in block details remain from the opening of the bridge) and floating bridge counterbalances weighting thousands of tons, allows lifting 700 tons of bridge spans. In 1997 the Palace Bridge got it's colorful illumination. During fests, the open spans of the bridge become the screen for imaged films.
The Anichkov Bridge is the first and most famous bridge across the Fontanka River in Saint Petersburg. The current bridge, built in 1841-42 and reconstructed in 1906-08, combines a simple form with some spectacular decorations. As well as its four famous horse sculptures (1849-50), the bridge has some of the most celebrated ornate iron railings in Saint Petersburg. The structure is mentioned in the works of Pushkin, Gogol, and Dostoevsky.
The bridge connects the historical center with the Malaya Okhta district. Suvorovsky prospect (which starts off from Nevskiy "Staronevskiy" prospect) is almost the direct road towards the bridge. On the further side of the river the road goes to Krasnogvardeyskaya place and, crossing the river Okhta, dissolves into the residential areas of the Stalin era.
The ceremony of bridge founding was organized on June 26, 1909 - in 200 years anniversary of Poltava Battle. In spite of this fact bridge was named after the emperor, who win the battle - Peter the Great Bridge. During the Soviet epoch the bridge was called Bolsheokhtinsky after the river Bolshaya Okhta.
The bridge features 3 spans, the central one can be drawn. The special thing about the bridge is lighthouse-like towers, boasting devices drawing the bridge. The length of the bridge is 335 meters, it's width is 23,5 meters. The weight of the metallic structures is 8920 tones, including the weight of the counterbalance, which is 1065 tones.
