Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, UAE

Dubai is known for its World firsts. One astounding example is the series of artificial archipelagos created by land reclamation in the emerald waters of the Arab Gulf. Palm Jumeirah, was the first offshore development of its kind, and was originally billed as the Eighth Wonder of the World. It is the World's largest man-made island and the first man-made earth form identified by the human eye from outer space.

Designed as a solution to create tourism components for the rapidly growing Dubai market, this landmark and triumph of human ingenuity consists of 3 man-made earth forms. The 2 kilometer long trunk is the hub of the island and includes a variety of retail shops, cafés, restaurants, entertainment options, Village Centre, five-star hotels, marinas, luxury shoreline apartments and beaches. It is connected to Dubai mainland by a 6-lane bridge and a monorail which is the first in the Middle East.

The Crown, connected to the trunk by a 300-meter (980 feet) bridge contains 17 fronds and encompasses signature villas, garden homes and townhomes offering a variety of sizes, designs and styles. The Crescent, a barrier reef and breakwater, surrounds the fronds and is connected to the Crown by a subsea tunnel and contains uniquely themed boutique hotels. The hotels on the crescent, including the Waldorf Astoria, Fairmont, One&Only, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, Kempinski, Rixos, Sofitel, Royal Club, and, perhaps most notably, the iconic Atlantis, they all offer world-class restaurants and are open to Palm residents as well as the public.

Atlantis, The Palm
